I think your reason is a most typical reason. Low budget wardrobes can get more use out of black. I also think that there is the "bad boy or girl" image, the desire to stand out, look a little "edgy". Now that I have adapted to the California lifestyle jeans and something will do for just about any occasion.
I have found the same thing, Joanne, after moving to rural New York. Artists here don't dress to stand out or look "edgy", as you say - they're more laid-back and will wear almost anything to their openings. Comfort is probably the operative word here!
